Research & Project Interests

Dr. Harrell’s research interests include the investigation of how cognitive control strategies and compensatory processes change in chronic illness and with age; assessment of the psychological and functional consequences of health decline in the chronically ill, and the determination of factors that facilitate successful adaptation to chronic illness and aging. He maintains an ongoing clinical and research program in these areas via the Fatigue Management Institute.

The FMI develops and provides community-based self-management training for adults with chronic illness, and coordinates research projects investigating the effectiveness of the training, participant characteristics, and the role of self-efficacy in fatigue management. The FMI has also conducted a national survey examining fatigue in the chronically ill.

Dr. Harrell has recently developed a national survey of parents caring for chronically ill and developmentally disabled children.  The online survey will be capturing data through July 2013.
